A cyclist needs his bike to get to the finish line but imagine Mario Cippolini on a whippy Vitus aluminum frame.  Or, lightweight mountain goat Jonathan Vaughters on a Columbus SP lugged heavy weight.  Obviously, the wrong choices for optimum performance.  There are so many types of bicycles out there for so many types of riders.  The key is buying what is right for your needs and wants.  Certain bike brands have fitting characteristics that suit certain body types (i.e. Eddy Merckx’s have notoriously long top tubes and laid back seat angles).

The “do it all for everybody” bike does not exist.  Plus factor in a rider’s preference for bike “feel” and “handling” characteristics make it that much more complicated.  Would you buy a $1000 off the rack suit in the wrong size hoping to “make it fit?”  Or, neglect to spend $50 to have it tailored by a journeyman tailor?  That is where most cyclists go wrong.  They buy based on what their favorite pro is paid to ride. Or, rely on magazine articles or a seemingly knowledgeable friend’s opinion.  Or worse yet, a bike shop employee with just enough fitting technique to be dangerous.
